Homemade Flour Tortillas

Homemade Flour Tortillas

I know, I know…you’ve all been waiting on pins and needles to get this last component to make the delicious Tex-Mex chili burritos and in my opinion, this is the most important part… homemade flour tortillas! There is magic that happens when you make these…the warm, fresh tortillas wrapped tightly around the fixings taste magnificent.

I can remember standing in my grandmother’s kitchen making a deal that if she made the chili and beans, I would roll out the dough.  She loves to cook but not necessarily roll out tortillas, haha.  I have tried it with store bought tortillas and the burritos just do not taste the same… you have to make your flour tortillas from scratch.  Once you realize how easy it is, you will NEVER buy tortillas from the store EVER again!

Ingredients needed for flour tortillas:

homemade_flour_tortillas4 cups of flour
2 teaspoons of salt
6 Tablespoons of shortening
1 and 1/4 cups of lukewarm water

Measure flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
Cut in shortening until blended well.  Add water.
Stir until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.
Sprinkle flour on rolling surface, knead dough 20x
Roll into medium sized balls (8 tortillas)
Roll out to desired thickness.

Below is the instructional video for the homemade flour tortillas along with a salad making interlude as I wait for the dough to set.  Enjoy!
